In Google, one of the primary ranking factors is link popularity. The number of links pointing to a page, along with quality and anchor text, are the most powerful way to rank a page for targeted search terms. Before anyone begins building links, it is important to know what makes for a good link building campaign. Below is a link building checklist to help guide your efforts and ensure that you receive a positive return on your time and effort.

Evaluate The Targeted Page

Occasionally, another webmaster will discover your site, or a page on it, and decide to link to it. More often than not, it is up to you to build links by reaching out to other webmasters. More importantly, it is important to reach out to the right webmasters. Here are some things to think about:

  • Evaluate the page’s link popularity
  • The quality of those links
  • and the information contained on that page

noflufflinkbuildingchecklist Link Building ChecklistAnchor text that is closely related to keywords is important, but a shift is happening that appears to be rewarding the relevancy of the page more than the anchor text itself. If a page is relevant to your page, and has valuable links pointing to it – not spam links – then the link is valuable. An irrelevant page, or one that is the target of many spam type links is less likely to pass value, and may even hurt rankings in some cases(the Penguin effect).  Links with good and valuable links pointing to them are likely to have high Page Rank and Page Authority, as measured by SEOmoz, which should raise the Page Rank and authority of your page as well.

Link Diversity

Some types of links have been devalued over time. A link building checklist should have categories for different types of links, as well as locations. When you start building links, create a long list of sites that are as diverse as possible, such as:

  1. Niche relevant directories
  2. Blogs
  3. Vendor websites
  4. Content aggregation sites
  5. and even niche relevant forums should all be included

Attempt to get a link from as many different sites as possible. This helps to ensure IP diversity, and will usually result in better anchor text distribution while insulating your site from future Google algorithmic updates.

Link Velocity

link building checklist velocitythumb Link Building ChecklistThe link building mistake most often made, apart from over optimization and spam, is poor link velocity. There are times when a page goes viral and receives a rush of links, but more often than not, the growth is fairly slow, and rarely is it consistent from day to day. While the goal is to get as many links as possible, those links should be spread out as much as possible. This has two advantages:

  • First, it allows you to track rankings and pinpoint links that may be helping the most, or hurting.
  • Second, it allows you to spend time on other projects, as well as to start getting links to other pages, which helps to raise the overall authority of your site.

Always keep this in mind, “SEO link building is of little use if you cannot track and measure results.”

Go And Rank

What Makes An Effective Blog Post? The answer to that question may surprise you.  If a blog post has been created based on a keyword or a key phrase then essentially you have an effective blog post.

Wait a minute, what was that?

Let me explain, a blog post or article that has been written based on a keyword or a key phrase is an effective blog post because everything within the post would have been designed and created based on the most important attribute of a blog:  a focus or primary keyword!

Everything that has to do with writing and creating an article or post has to do with SEO and what is SEO?  Content rich with “keywords” or “key phrases.”

That would mean that the Article Heading, Page Title, Page URL, Page Content and Image were created with a focus keyword or key phrase.  Hence, the blog post was written using the Keyword in the 6 key components of an effective blog post.  Keep in mind that your title tag and your meta tag description would naturally take the attributes of these 6 primary components as well.

“Hmmm….okay?”

I know it sounds way too simple but if I show you an effective blog example and breakdown each component, I think you’ll agree.

But first, lets review what those key components are for an effective blog post.

A Focus or Primary Keyword or Key phrase MUST appear in these areas:

  1. Page URL
  2. Page Title
  3. First Paragraph
  4. Content
  5. SEO Title
  6. Meta Description

Take a look at this first screen shot:

what makes an effective blog post1 What Makes An Effective Blog Post?

Components 1 and 2:

1.  Does the Page URL have a keyword or key phrase?  Yes!  You can’t see the URL however here is a snippet of what the URL actually is – com/academy/ecommerce-mistakes.

2.  Does the Page Title have a keyword or key phrase? Yes!  Notice the Page Title in bold print – 9 ecommerce mistakes and how to avoid them.

Note:  If you didn’t notice it…..look at the title and url again and you’ll see that the entire title and url do not match.  This was done intentionally as the author first didn’t want a huge URL(permalink) for there article so they shortened it.  A Very effective SEO and Blog technique!!

Here’s our second screenshot :

Components 3 and 4:

3.  Does the First Paragraph have a keyword or key phrase?  Yes!  Take a look at the second to last sentence in the first paragraph.

4.  Does the Content have a keyword or key phrase?  Yes!  You’ll see that the primary keyword and key phrase is repeated multiple times within the body content of the post.  In addition…..what you don’t see is that the shopping cart image with mouse has an alt tag consistent with the keyword and key phrase as well.

Here’s our third and final screenshot:

what makes an effective blog post3 What Makes An Effective Blog Post?

Components 5 and 6:

5.  Does the SEO Title have the primary keyword or key phrase?  Yes!  You can’t see it but if you use the link below you’ll be able to view the Live post at Wordtracker’s website.

6.  Does the Meta Description have the primary keyword or key phrase?  Yes!  Again…you can’t see it but if you do a “view page source” in the live article you’ll see the meta description and you’ll notice that it has both the keyword and phrase.

So What Makes an Effective Blog Post?  Hopefully by reading this article you’ll be closer to understanding what makes a blog effective.  But in case you missed something….just make sure you integrate at a minimum these 6 components and I think you’ll start seeing more traffic and visitors to your website.  In the end getting more traffic is the ultimate goal, so use these techniques to create your own effective blogshop4diets.com

presentation Paradux Media Group Completes 10 Week SEO CourseMike Frey, Chief Visionary Officer at Paradux Media Group from Eagle Point Oregon just completed an intense 10 week SEO course I offer as part of my Training and Coaching package and here’s what he had to say after a few weeks from completion. . .

Rick,

I wanted to take the time to let you know how much I appreciated your 10-week SEO class.  Knowing absolutely nothing about SEO I was a little bit intimidated going in, coming out I am very comfortable with every aspect of SEO.  I know look at every website differently, every Google search I do, and how I treat my own website and blog.

I am amazed at all the little things that I was so unaware of and how they all add up to a big thing, creating landing pages for popular blogs, adding SEO to our images and the cool analytic tricks.  Our website has seen a dramatic change in just a short period and has already paid off in new clients and conversations with new potential clients due only to our improved SEO.

The timing could not have been better, as in the middle of our training a popular television show announced they were coming to our area, (ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Show).   I decided to blog about the event and using what I had learned from you about SEO my blog was at the top of all local Google searches regarding the event.  I have since written a follow up blog and now both blogs are at the top ahead of all the news media and other bloggers.  Just good SEO.  The increase percentage in how many hits my blog has gotten has a lot of zeros and commas.  I can only thank my SEO training for that.

I would highly recommend your SEO classes to any business owner.  If your SEO techniques are applied, a ROI will be achieved.  Even with this thank you note, I think I did ok with achieving the proper keyword density for SEO.  Thanks Rick.
